St. Louis area courts are comprised of state, federal and municipal courts. St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County are state courts. More serious criminal cases are usually filed here. In addition, each of the dozens of small municipalities (i.e. Kirkwood, Charlack, etc.) that make up the St. Louis metro area have their own municipal court. These courts typically handle minor matters including traffic tickets, petty larceny and other small matters. These courts generally meet at night. If you want to avoid a night or two in court fighting a long line, hire an attorney. Making matters a little confusing, St. Louis County, St. Louis City and St. Charles County also have a municipal court.

Finally, the Eastern District Court of Missouri is located in St. Louis. This is the federal court and handles serious federal criminal prosecutions among other federal cases.
